Interview with Andy Halliday – Head Coach of the England team

As the EuroHockey Indoor Championship II - Espinho 2016 is almost here, the organization of the event decided to interview some persons of interest that will be part of the event taking place between 15th to 17th January. This time, England’s head coach, Andy Halliday, kindly answered a few questions in behalf of his national team, as well as his own thoughts about the country hosting the event, Portugal.

How is being the preparation of your team for the EuroHockey Espinho 2016?
Our preparation has been good. We use the indoor game as an opportunity for our young International outdoor players to develop. We hope the pressures of playing in an International competition will help their all-round ability.
We have used a short 4 team tournament in Belgium to help us. Unlike many other European countries, our indoor season is short. In my opinion, we don't play enough of the indoor game.

What are your expectations?
We would love to be promoted back to the top level, but it is very important that we see the players improve and develop.
Initially, we will be targeting a finish in the top two of our pool.

In your opinion, what are the strongest teams of this event?
There is great strength in European indoor hockey and this event will demonstrate the depth of quality.
I expect France will be strong and I am sure that the hosts, Portugal, will be looking to impress playing at home.

Do you know Portugal? What do you think of the country?
I know that many English people speak fondly of the Algarve, a splendid holiday destination. My first European hockey experience was in Lisbon, playing for England Under-21 outdoor team in a European Cup qualifying tournament. However, the games were on grass, it was 1983... We had a fantastic trip to Lisbon!
